July 2009 Editor's Note

Dear Reader:

Describing her work, Maya Angelou said, “I am always talking about the human condition—about what we can endure, dream, fail at, and still survive.”

There is no explicit theme to this, our tenth issue; but as we discussed and compiled fiction by Seth Borgen and David Mohrmann, and poetry by Heather Derr-Smith and Buff Whitman-Bradley, we inadvertently noticed that each of these pieces centers, in its own way, on the perpetual struggle that is humanity.

We're proud, also, to feature innovative sculptural work by Heather MacKenzie, and a review by Ayelet Amittay of Victor Lodato's debut novel, Mathilda Savitch.

We hope you enjoy these pieces as much as we did.

Sincerely yours,

Charles Gershman
